Ashton
Band Educator — Ithaca College B.M. Music Education
Ashton leads Hilton's full band program, which means bassoon students get a teacher who knows the instrument as part of a complete woodwind and brass education. He studied music education at Ithaca College with an oboe concentration — giving him direct grounding in double-reed technique that carries into bassoon instruction. The embouchure, reed mechanics, and air-support discipline that define oboe study transfer directly to bassoon; Ashton's background means he teaches those concepts from first-hand experience, not from a method book. Before joining Hilton, Ashton taught high-school band and chorus for grades 5 through 12, so he understands what Capital Region band directors expect from a bassoon section and what NYSSMA adjudicators score.
Bassoon lessons with Ashton cover all ages and all starting points — from a student entering school band to an adult picking up the instrument for the first time. He teaches in person at Colonie Center and online.
