What You'll Learn in Brass Lessons
Every brass lesson at Hilton is built on the same physical foundation —
embouchure, mouthpiece buzzing, breath support, and range development — then shaped entirely by your specific instrument, your current level, and your goals. A trumpet student working on high-register range development needs different exercises than a tuba student building low-register air capacity, or a French horn student drilling partial accuracy across the harmonic series. Ashton plans each lesson accordingly.
Mouthpiece Buzzing and Embouchure. Every brass player starts here. The instrument does not produce a sound until the player's lips buzz correctly against the mouthpiece. Ashton begins every new student with mouthpiece-only buzzing exercises — no valves, no slide, just the mouthpiece held to the lips — because this isolates the one skill that everything else depends on. A trumpet mouthpiece has a shallow cup; a trombone mouthpiece has a larger, deeper cup; a French horn mouthpiece is a narrow funnel; a tuba mouthpiece is the widest and deepest of all. Each shape rewards a slightly different lip tension and aperture size. Ashton builds these habits correctly from the very first lesson, because a bad embouchure formed early is significantly harder to undo than a correct one built from the start.
Breath Support and Air Column. Air is the engine of every brass instrument, and each instrument taxes it differently. The
tuba demands more air volume than any other wind instrument — its wide, long bore needs a steady, full column to resonate properly. The
French horn demands precision: the air stream must be focused to land on the correct note in a densely-packed harmonic series.
Trombone requires a strong, sustained column that keeps the slide moving through positions without pressure variations that throw intonation off. Trumpet demands fast, directed air for upper-register work, and relaxed, full air for the lower range. Whatever your instrument, you will spend significant lesson time on diaphragm support, phrase breath, and the muscle memory that keeps your air consistent through a full musical line.
Valves, Slide Positions, and Pitch Production. Pitch changes on brass instruments happen in two ways: the player's lip tension (embouchure changes) navigate between harmonics on a given tubing length, and mechanical changes — pressing a valve combination or moving a slide — shift the total length of that tubing. The standard Bb trumpet has three piston valves; French horn has a double F/Bb rotor system with a thumb trigger. Trombone has no valves at all — seven slide positions and the player's ear are the only guide. Tuba has three to five piston or rotary valves. Ashton teaches every system methodically, connecting the mechanics to the sound the student hears rather than just the position numbers on paper.
Range Development and Lip Slurs. Expanding your usable range is a long-term project on any brass instrument. Ashton uses structured exercises — lip slurs, interval studies, and long tones — to build the muscular control that opens up the upper register safely. On French horn this is especially critical: the harmonic series packs notes close together in the middle register, so landing on the correct pitch requires ear training alongside the physical practice. On tuba the challenge is the opposite — sustaining long, slow notes in the lowest register without letting the pitch sag. Each instrument has its own range-development approach, and Ashton builds it into every lesson from the beginning.
Tone Development and NYSSMA Preparation. A technically correct setup — correct embouchure, adequate air support, right mouthpiece — produces the raw material of tone. What develops over months of lessons is the player's control of that tone: consistency across registers, dynamic range, and the kind of musical expression that separates a technically correct player from one who actually sounds good.
