Getting Started

What age can my child start music lessons?

Starting age varies by instrument and individual readiness. Piano lessons in Albany typically begin at ages 5–6, though some of our instructors welcome students as young as 4. Suzuki violin lessons can begin as early as age 4 with the right teacher-parent partnership. Guitar, ukulele, and bass generally suit ages 6 and up; voice lessons are typically introduced at age 8 or older. With younger students we find that parent involvement makes a big difference.  You should plan on sitting in on lessons with children under 8 years old.  Ultimately, everyone is different, and what works out best for your child can be determined with your instructor.  We invite parents to explore the mall, many massage chairs and close by food courts and such. Please however be back prior to the lesson ending time. The teacher match matters more than a strict minimum age — call (518) 459-9400 and we'll help find the right fit.

Do I need my own instrument before the first lesson?

It helps but isn't required for lesson one. Hilton Music Center's retail store on the same floor sells and rents every instrument we teach — students can purchase, rent-to-own, or size up in the same visit. Any instrument purchase of $200 or more includes a free half-hour introductory lesson, which makes the first lesson free for most new students who buy their instrument here.

How do I pick the right instrument for my child — or myself?

Personality and musical interests are better guides than any "best first instrument" rule. Piano builds strong music-theory foundations and suits analytical learners. Guitar and ukulele offer fast, rewarding wins and work across nearly every genre. Drums are ideal for high-energy students. Voice needs no equipment purchase. Our front desk and teachers are happy to help you think through the decision — call (518) 459-9400 or stop by Colonie Center any day of the week.

Can adults take music lessons at Hilton?

Absolutely — every instrument is taught to adults at every level, from complete beginners to returning players picking up after a decades-long break. Many of our students are in their 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60s, including retirees who have always wanted to learn. It is never too late to start, and our instructors tailor every lesson plan to where you are right now.

Are virtual lessons available?

Most lessons at Hilton are in-person at our Colonie Center studio. Virtual lessons via video are available with three specific instructors: John Stopera (guitar, bass, ukulele — virtual only), Noriko (Suzuki violin — virtual only), and Mark Ahola (guitar, bass, ukulele, banjo, mandolin — both in-person and virtual). Piano, drums, voice, viola, cello, brass, woodwinds, and music production are taught in person only. Call (518) 459-9400 to confirm format availability for your instrument.

Do I need to read music before starting lessons?

No. Our teachers start from zero. Many students learn to read standard notation over time; others focus on chord charts, tablature, ear training, or playing by feel. Your teacher will discuss your goals in the first lesson and set the right path from there.

Pricing & Packages

How much do music lessons cost at Hilton School of Music?

Lesson pricing is published and transparent — no hidden fees, no callbacks required. All rates apply to every instrument and every age group:

  • 4-Week Pack · 30 min weekly: $150
  • 4-Week Pack · 45 min weekly: $225
  • 4-Week Pack · 1 hour weekly: $300
  • Single Drop-In Lesson · 30 min: $40
  • Free half-hour lesson with any instrument purchase of $200 or more

Most students start with the 4-week, 30-minute package ($150) and move to 45- or 60-minute sessions as they advance. See the Music Lessons overview page for the full pricing table.

Is there a discount for multiple students from the same family?

We regularly accommodate multi-student households and can help coordinate scheduling and package options. Contact our front desk at (518) 459-9400 or email info@hiltonmusiccenter.com to discuss what works best for your family.

Can I get a free lesson with an instrument purchase?

Yes — any instrument purchase of $200 or more includes a free half-hour introductory lesson. This applies to new students and returning students alike, and it works for any instrument we teach. It's a great way to try a teacher and a format before committing to a 4-week pack. Stop by the store at Colonie Center or call (518) 459-9400 to ask about current in-stock instruments.

Is there an application or enrollment fee?

No. There are no application fees, enrollment fees, or contracts. You pay for your lesson package and that's it. If you decide to stop, pause, or switch instruments, there is no cancellation penalty.

Scheduling & Attendance

How long are lessons, and what does a typical week look like?

Private lessons are scheduled once a week and run 30, 45, or 60 minutes depending on your package. Sessions are always one-on-one — just you and your teacher. HMC Rock Band is a separate group-ensemble format with its own scheduling. Hilton Music Center is open Monday–Saturday 11am–8pm and Sunday 12pm–6pm, with lesson times set directly between you and your instructor.

How do I reschedule or cancel a lesson?

Contact the front desk as early as possible at (518) 459-9400 or info@hiltonmusiccenter.com. Rescheduling policies vary by instructor — confirm the specific window with your teacher when you start. Early communication always gives us the best chance to find a makeup slot.

What happens to lessons during school vacations and holidays?

Many teachers schedule makeup lessons around school breaks and holidays; some maintain a standard schedule through vacation periods. Check with your individual teacher before any break to confirm the plan. When in doubt, call the front desk and we'll sort it out.

Can my child take lessons more than once per week?

Lessons are designed as once-per-week sessions because a full week of practice between lessons is what drives real progress. Coming in twice a week without enough practice time in between typically does not benefit the student. That said, if your schedule or goals call for a different arrangement — for example, intensive NYSSMA prep or college audition preparation on a tight timeline — talk to your teacher and we will work something out.

Teachers & Teaching Style

How are students matched with teachers?

Matching is based on instrument, skill level, musical goals, schedule availability, and personality fit. Our front desk team coordinates with the faculty to suggest the right teacher for each new student. If the first match isn't clicking after a few lessons, we'll arrange a change — no penalty, no awkwardness.

Can I switch teachers if the fit isn't right?

Yes, always. Teacher-student chemistry is real and it matters. Let the front desk know at (518) 459-9400 and we'll set up a switch. Our goal is for every student to look forward to their lesson — the right teacher makes all the difference.

Do teachers follow a set curriculum, or is every lesson customized?

Every lesson plan is built around the individual student — skill level, learning style, musical interests, and specific goals all drive the plan. Our faculty uses a range of proven methods where appropriate: the Suzuki method for violin, Alfred and Faber series for piano, Hal Leonard and related method books for guitar, and rudiment-first approaches for drums. Classical conservatory training, contemporary technique, and genre-specific coaching are all in the mix depending on what you want to achieve.

What are the credentials of Hilton Music Center teachers?

The Hilton School of Music faculty includes graduates of Berklee College of Music, New England Conservatory, Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam, Houghton College, SUNY Fredonia, and Istanbul University State Conservatory. Among the faculty: a violinist who has performed at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center and guest-instructed at Juilliard and Bard; a drummer with Drumhead Magazine credits; a vocal instructor with an MM in Vocal Performance; a Music Therapist with an MM and 30 years of teaching; and a music production specialist with 10+ years in professional audio engineering, ADR, Foley, mixing, and mastering. Collectively, the faculty covers every major instrument and genre taught at the school.

My child has special needs — can your teachers accommodate that?

Yes. We pride ourselves on having experienced, patient instructors who adapt to every student's learning style. One of our faculty members holds a Master's in Music Therapy with over 30 years of practice, and our entire team is committed to working with both the student and the family to find the right teacher match and lesson approach. The goal is always the most rewarding experience possible — call (518) 459-9400 and we will help find the right fit.

Instruments & Gear

Can I buy an instrument at Hilton Music Center?

Yes — the retail store on the same floor as the school sells guitars, basses, ukuleles, banjos, mandolins, drum kits, amps, keyboards, violins, cellos, band instruments (flute, clarinet, saxophone, oboe, trumpet, trombone, French horn, tuba), harmonicas, PA equipment, USB microphones, and home recording gear. Note: acoustic and grand pianos are sold by Hilton Piano Center (442 Colonie Center, separate business) — Hilton Music Center carries retail-level keyboards and digital pianos.

Do you rent instruments?

Yes — instrument rentals are available for band instruments (woodwinds and brass) and string instruments, which is ideal for students in school music programs and for children who are still growing into their instrument size. Ask at the front desk about current rental inventory and terms.

Do you repair instruments?

Yes — on-site repairs are available for guitars, bass guitars, band instruments, and most string instruments. Setups, re-strings, intonation adjustments, and standard repairs keep student gear playable and sounding its best. Bring your instrument by Colonie Center or call (518) 459-9400 to check wait times.

How does instrument sizing work for kids — especially strings?

Fractional sizing is essential for children learning violin, viola, cello, and guitar. Playing on an instrument that is too large causes poor technique and physical strain. Our staff will fit the right size for your child during their first visit and can resize as they grow. Violin and viola lessons often begin with a 1/4 or 1/2 size instrument — we keep common sizes in stock.

NYSSMA, Recitals & Performance

Do you prepare students for NYSSMA evaluations?

Yes — NYSSMA (New York State School Music Association) preparation is built into lessons for piano, voice, strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion students who are pursuing evaluations. Bring your required solo list and tell your teacher your evaluation date; prep becomes part of your weekly lesson plan from that point forward. Violin and viola students and band instrument students regularly participate in NYSSMA festivals through their school programs.

Do you host student recitals?

Yes — Hilton School of Music organizes student recitals and performance events throughout the year. Recitals are a built-in part of the learning arc, not an optional extra. Performing for an audience — even a small, supportive one — accelerates growth in ways weekly practice cannot replicate. Ask your teacher or the front desk about upcoming recital dates.

What is HMC Rock Band?

HMC Rock Band is a group-ensemble program where student musicians rehearse together as a real working band — guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, and vocals — and work toward live performances. It's designed for teens and adults who want to move beyond private lessons and experience what it feels like to play music with other people. If you're taking guitar lessons, bass lessons, drum lessons, or voice lessons, ask the front desk about current Rock Band cohorts and openings.

Programs & Specializations

Do you teach music production and recording?

Yes — music production and recording lessons in Albany are taught by a professional audio engineer with 10+ years of experience in digital recording, sound design, ADR/Foley, mixing, and mastering. Students work in the DAW of their choice: Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Ableton Live, GarageBand, or FL Studio. Whether your goal is producing beats, recording original music, or building a career in audio, production lessons at Hilton are built around your specific workflow and goals.

Do you help students prepare for college auditions or musical theater?

Yes — college music program audition preparation, music technology program prep, and musical theater audition coaching are available through our piano, voice, and specialty instructors. Tell your teacher your audition timeline and target programs as early as possible; strong audition prep typically takes at least one full semester. Our voice teachers in Albany and piano instructors have guided students through conservatory and university program auditions.

Do you offer ensemble, orchestra, or chamber music programs?

Private lessons are the foundation. Beyond that, performance opportunities include HMC Rock Band (popular ensemble), chamber music coaching for strings (led by Byron Duckwall, who has performed at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center), and school-ensemble support for students in district band, orchestra, and chorus. Ask about current ensemble offerings when you enroll — availability varies by semester. String students interested in chamber work should mention it at sign-up.

About Our Home

Music in Albany — New York's Capital Region

Hilton Music Center has called Albany, New York, home since 1939. Our studios sit upstairs at Colonie Center on the corner of Wolf Road and Central Avenue — just a short drive from Lark Street's arts and dining strip, the historic Center Square neighborhood, and the cultural anchors of Empire State Plaza.

New York's capital is also one of the country's most underrated music cities. Washington Park hosts the Park Playhouse and outdoor concerts every summer. The MVP Arena (formerly Times Union Center) brings touring acts downtown. The Egg at Empire State Plaza books world-class chamber, jazz, and contemporary performers. Lark Street's bars and clubs host singer-songwriters, jam bands, and local rock acts year-round, and the annual Albany Tulip Festival brings free concerts to Washington Park every May.

Beyond Albany proper, the Capital Region — including Colonie, Latham, Loudonville, Delmar, Guilderland, Bethlehem, Niskayuna, Clifton Park, Troy, Schenectady, and Saratoga Springs — is dense with school music programs, community orchestras, church music ministries, and working musicians. Hilton students perform at NYSSMA evaluations across upstate New York, in school orchestras and bands from Bethlehem Central to Shenendehowa, and on stages from Caffè Lena in Saratoga to The Egg in Albany. We're proud to be part of that musical fabric — and we'd love to be part of yours.
