FAQs regarding music lessons at the Hilton School of Music:

Do you offer music lessons online?
Yes!  For those who are more comfortable recieving their music instruction from home, or for those times when inclement weather may prevent your in-person lesson, our teachers are able to teach you virtually - so you'll never need to miss a week!

But can't one be "too old" to learn to play a music instrument?
No such thing! Like learning anything new at any age, it's impossible to be "too old" to learn to play a music instrument. In fact, senior-age students often have advantages like dicipline and focus. Not to mention, the mental stimulation and enjoyment that learning something new provides. HSM has successfully taught countless senior adult students - many well into their 70's, 80's and even 90's! And remember - our lessons are custom-designed to fit the learning pace and style of each individual. In short, we make lessons convenient, fun and pressure free - no matter what your stage in life.

Are the music lessons at Hilton School of Music private or in a group?
With the exception of our "Rock Band" class, all music lessons provided by our professional instructors are one-one-one in a private lesson room setting. We welcome and encourage the parents of younger children to sit in on lessons, if they so choose.

How long is each music lesson, and how often are they given?

A single music lesson at the Hilton School of Music is 30 minutes in length. It is always given on the same assigned weekday and at the same time. The only exception would be a make-up lesson that may be scheduled between the student/parent and the teacher.

Is there and application fee to sign up for music lessons?

No. At HCM, students are never charged any type of fee for their music lessons.

What if I want to come more than once per week?
We find that music lessons beyond our bi-weekly schedule really doesn't benefit our students. What is important - and highly encouraged - is a solid week of practice between each music lesson.

How old must my child be for music lessons at Hilton School of Music?
Typically, 5 or 6 years old is the sweet spot. However, we have children as young as 4 how do very well. Parent involvement makes a big difference.

Do I have to learn to read music?
We have experienced and seasoned teachers who not only want to give their students the ability to love music but to be able to grow to their full potential.  Because it is all about the student and not in a group, each lesson is tailored to keep that student enthusiastic and with achievable goals whether it is more formal or not.

Are the teachers at the Hilton School of Music able to accomodate a child with special needs?
At the Hilton School of Music, we take great pride in having the Capital Region's most experienced, versatile and patient music instructors. We will be happy to work with both student and family to find just the right the right fit for any child. Our goal is make music lessons for any child the most nurturing and rewarding experience possible.

What makes Hilton School of Music the Capital Region's best choice for music lessons?

We love what we do.  There is great passion with our teachers to offer music in your lives. We have experienced teachers who can adapt to the student, their needs and wants and learning styles. We pride ourselves to teach correctly to enhance that student's ability and goals and to customize the session each week is what sets us apart. We also have everything you will need in one location.  We carry all of the lesson books and accessories your teacher will be recommending. What is also an amazing advantage is we have experienced team members that can restring an instrument and expert repair for everything else all under one roof!  Another great plus is you can stroll the beautiful Colonie Center Mall to shop or catch a bite while your child takes a lesson. Parents with young students are highly encouraged to stay in or nearby the lesson area.

Does the Hilton School of Music hold student recitals?
Absolutely!  At HSM, we love to offer our students the opportunity to showcase their hard work and progress in a big way. Our recitals are typically held biannually in the spring and fall at our Colonie Center location (lower-level concourse in front of Macy's). We provide professional    staging, expert sound enginering and designated seating for family and friends to comfortably enjoy the recital experience. Although all HSM students are highly-encouraraged to take part, participation is not mandatory.
