Every lesson at Hilton School of Music is private — one student, one teacher, one dedicated lesson room. Each curriculum includes applied music theory, ear training, and sight reading alongside technique. Lessons are held once per week on a consistent day and time, with make-up lessons available when scheduled directly between the student and teacher. Parents of younger children are welcome and encouraged to sit in on lessons. Students who want to go beyond private study can join HMC Rock Band, our musical ensemble program that puts students on stage together. Music production lessons are available for aspiring recording artists and audio engineers.
Most lessons are in-person at our Colonie Center studio in Albany. Select instructors on guitar, bass, ukulele, and violin also offer virtual lessons via video — ideal for families outside the immediate Albany area or for days when inclement weather would otherwise mean a missed lesson.

Rock Band classes combine professional coaching with the excitement of playing rock, pop, and modern music as a group. Students on guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, and vocals rehearse together as a working band, learning to listen, lock in with a rhythm section, take cues from bandmates, and perform for a live audience. The program is open to young musicians, teens, and adults.

Twice a year — spring and fall — Hilton School of Music hosts student recitals at our Colonie Center location. These are not casual play-throughs in a back room. Our recitals feature professional staging, expert sound engineering, and designated seating for family and friends in the lower-level concourse in front of Macy's — a real performance environment where students experience what it feels like to play for an audience.
Although all Hilton School of Music students are strongly encouraged to participate, recitals are not mandatory. Your teacher will help you prepare a piece, rehearse under performance conditions, and walk on stage feeling ready. For many students, recital day is the highlight of their year.

Hilton Music Center publishes its pricing — no hidden fees, no "call for a quote." Private lessons are available in three session lengths, billed in 4-week packages: 30-minute lessons are $150 per 4-week pack, 45-minute lessons are $225, and 60-minute (1-hour) lessons are $300. If you prefer to try before you commit, a single 30-minute lesson is $40. As a bonus, any instrument purchase of $200 or more from our store includes a free 30-minute introductory lesson — a perk no other Albany music school can offer.

We also offer HMC Rock Band as a group ensemble program for students who want to play with others.
For piano, most of our instructors begin students at age 5 or 6, and some will start students as young as 4 depending on the child's readiness and focus. For guitar and ukulele, ages 6 to 7 are a common starting point. Research on cognitive development consistently supports early musical instruction — children who start young build stronger pattern recognition, memory, and motor coordination. That said, there is no upper age limit. We teach adults at every level, from absolute beginners returning to a childhood dream to experienced players seeking a new skill. It is never too late to start.

Absolutely. All of our instructors teach adult students, and many of our adult learners are beginners. Whether you played as a child and want to pick it back up, or you have always wanted to learn and never had the chance, Hilton Music Center welcomes you at any age and any skill level. Private lessons are well-suited to adult learners because the curriculum is tailored entirely to your goals — your schedule, your preferred style, your pace. There is no class to keep up with, no curriculum to follow if it does not serve you.
