Why Take Voice Lessons?

Your voice is the only instrument you were born with — and singing is a skill, not a birthright. Most people who say they "can't sing" simply haven't been taught proper technique. A trained voice teacher shows you how to use your instrument the way it was designed to work: with breath, resonance, and control rather than strain.

Untrained singers routinely push from the throat, a habit that limits range, causes fatigue, and over time can cause real vocal damage. Learning to sing from the diaphragm — the muscle that actually drives breath support — changes everything. Pitch steadies. Range expands. The voice stops cracking on high notes and thinning on low ones.

Beyond pure technique, voice lessons build skills that carry into every part of life: stage confidence, public speaking presence, audition readiness, and the simple satisfaction of opening your mouth and knowing something beautiful will come out.

Meet Your Voice Teachers

Charlotte Xiaoling Zhang — Hilton Music Center instructor

Charlotte Xiaoling Zhang

MM Vocal Performance — Houghton College · BM Music Education — Central China Normal University · Teaching at Hilton Music Center since 2016

Charlotte brings a classical conservatory foundation to every lesson. Holding her Master of Music in Vocal Performance from Houghton College and her Bachelor of Music Education from Central China Normal University, she has been teaching voice and piano at Hilton Music Center since 2016. Her classical training — rooted in proper breath support, resonance, and register navigation — translates directly into musical theater, pop, and contemporary repertoire, making her equally effective with students preparing for a school musical as with those pursuing classical vocal study. Charlotte teaches students of all ages from beginner through advanced.

What You'll Learn in Voice Lessons at Hilton

Curriculum at Hilton School of Music is never one-size-fits-all. Every student starts with an assessment of their current range, technique, and goals, then follows a progression built around their voice — whether they're singing for the first time or preparing for a college audition.

Foundational Technique

Every strong voice is built on the same foundation: diaphragmatic breathing, breath support, posture, larynx position, and vocal warm-ups. We establish these habits first so that everything else — range, power, consistency — has a stable base.

Finding Your Voice

Students identify their natural vocal range — soprano, mezzo-soprano, alto, tenor, baritone, or bass — and learn to navigate their registers: chest voice, head voice, and mixed voice. Exercises address vibrato, falsetto, and the transition zones (called passaggi) where most untrained singers crack.

Musical Theater Prep

Albany-area students auditioning for school plays, community theater productions, or summer programs get targeted instruction: song selection matched to voice type and character, shaping a 16-bar audition cut, understanding when to belt versus sing legit, and coaching on acting through song. This is one of the most underserved areas of voice instruction in the Capital Region — and one of Hilton's strengths.

Audition Prep

We prepare students for local school musical auditions, Capital Region community theater tryouts, NYSSMA Solo Festival evaluations, all-county and all-state vocal selections, and college-level auditions. Preparation includes mock auditions, repertoire guidance, and feedback on presentation.

Genre Study

Students choose a stylistic focus or rotate through several: classical and opera (bel canto tradition), musical theatre, pop, rock, R&B, jazz, gospel, and country. Genre study is integrated with technique — not taught in isolation — so stylistic choices always serve the voice.

Musicianship

Singers who can read music learn new material faster and audition more confidently. We incorporate solfège, ear training, sight-singing, basic music theory, and introductory piano work so students can learn and transpose repertoire independently.

Voice Lessons FAQ

What age can a child start singing lessons?

Most children are ready to begin light vocal instruction around age 5 or 6. At that age, vocal cords are healthy enough for basic technique work when instruction is age-appropriate — gentle warm-ups, simple songs, ear training, and breath awareness rather than heavy technique. Pre-teens and teenagers often progress the fastest of any age group because their voices respond quickly to technical training. Hilton's instructors adapt their teaching approach to the student: play-based musical activities for younger students, full technical progressions starting in late elementary. There is no fixed age cutoff — the right time is when the student is excited to sing.

Is it too late to learn to sing as an adult?

No. Vocal technique is a skill, and skills improve at any age with good instruction and consistent practice. Adult learners often progress faster than children in some respects because they self-direct their practice more effectively and understand feedback more quickly. Common adult goals we work with: singing at a wedding or family event, joining a church choir, performing in a community theater production, building enough confidence for karaoke, or simply learning to enjoy your own voice. None of these require natural talent — they require good teaching and practice.

What is the difference between a voice teacher and a vocal coach?

A voice teacher builds foundational technique: breath support, pitch, register control, range expansion, diction, and vocal health. A vocal coach typically works on interpretation, style, and repertoire with singers who already have a trained foundation. At Hilton, our voice instructors do both — the line between technical development and interpretive coaching shifts as the student progresses. Beginners start with technique; more advanced students move into repertoire coaching and performance preparation naturally within the same lessons.

How do you prepare students for musical theater auditions and school plays?

This is an area we address directly, and it is one of the things that sets Hilton's voice program apart from many private vocal coaches in the Albany area. Preparation includes: selecting a song appropriate for the student's voice type and the show they are auditioning for, shaping a 16-bar audition cut that shows the voice at its best, understanding whether to belt or sing in a legit soprano style based on what the casting panel is looking for, and working on acting through the song — conveying character and story, not just notes. We also prepare students for NYSSMA Solo Festival evaluations, all-county and all-state vocal auditions, and college-level musical theater program auditions. Mock auditions with feedback are part of the process for students who want them.

What is the difference between chest voice and head voice?

Chest voice is the lower register of your singing voice — the resonance you feel in your chest when you speak at a normal pitch or sing notes in your lower range. Head voice is the upper register, where resonance shifts to the skull and sinus cavities, producing a lighter, airier tone. Most singers need to develop a smooth "mix" between the two registers so that transitions are seamless rather than cracking or flipping. Learning to blend chest and head voice cleanly — and eventually to belt or access falsetto intentionally — is one of the core goals of technical voice training.

How much do voice lessons cost at Hilton Music Center?

Lesson pricing is published and straightforward. A 4-week pack of 30-minute lessons is $150. A 4-week pack of 45-minute lessons is $225. A 4-week pack of 60-minute lessons is $300. A single 30-minute lesson is $40. Additionally, any instrument or gear purchase over $200 includes a free half-hour lesson — making it easy to get started if you are also buying a microphone or other equipment. Call (518) 459-9400 or stop in at Colonie Center with any questions about scheduling.

Can voice lessons damage your voice?

Properly taught voice lessons protect your voice — they do not harm it. The habits that cause vocal damage are the ones we train students away from: pushing from the throat, singing without breath support, forcing high notes with tension, and habitual shouting or belting without technique. A good voice teacher builds vocal health alongside skill. Students who learn correct technique early are significantly less likely to develop the hoarseness, fatigue, or nodule risk that comes from years of untrained singing.

About Our Home

Music in Albany — New York's Capital Region

Hilton Music Center has called Albany, New York, home since 1939. Our studios sit upstairs at Colonie Center on the corner of Wolf Road and Central Avenue — just a short drive from Lark Street's arts and dining strip, the historic Center Square neighborhood, and the cultural anchors of Empire State Plaza.

New York's capital is also one of the country's most underrated music cities. Washington Park hosts the Park Playhouse and outdoor concerts every summer. The MVP Arena (formerly Times Union Center) brings touring acts downtown. The Egg at Empire State Plaza books world-class chamber, jazz, and contemporary performers. Lark Street's bars and clubs host singer-songwriters, jam bands, and local rock acts year-round, and the annual Albany Tulip Festival brings free concerts to Washington Park every May.

Beyond Albany proper, the Capital Region — including Colonie, Latham, Loudonville, Delmar, Guilderland, Bethlehem, Niskayuna, Clifton Park, Troy, Schenectady, and Saratoga Springs — is dense with school music programs, community orchestras, church music ministries, and working musicians. Hilton students perform at NYSSMA evaluations across upstate New York, in school orchestras and bands from Bethlehem Central to Shenendehowa, and on stages from Caffè Lena in Saratoga to The Egg in Albany. We're proud to be part of that musical fabric — and we'd love to be part of yours.
